The Others

Blog: A Spiritualist Medium's Point of View

How Does It Work?
I had a conversation recently with a friend who wondered if, because I was psychic, I could see into other people’s heads all the time. The idea of going to a psychic who might be able to see your every thought and feeling and intention would be very disturbing. In case you’re wondering how it works, I’ll explain what I do from my point of view. The way that other psychics and mediums work may be totally different.

When someone comes to me for a reading, information about them comes through because we are both asking for guidance for that person, and in asking for the “highest and best,” I expect that my guides will bring only information that will benefit that person in some way, not that they will show me every little aspect of the person’s life. And when I’m not doing a reading, I keep my aura and my psychic centers “closed,” for a number of reasons. One is that I have enough trouble keeping track of my own thoughts and experiences – if I knew what was going on in other people’s heads all the time, I would probably go crazy from overwhelm. Another reason is that, being sensitive to others’ feelings, I need to be protected when I’m not reading in order to stay centered and not feel tossed around by all the feelings that people around me are having. I have to be able to live my life outside of my ability as well as with it. And finally, I personally can only do this work with a strong sense of ethics: I don’t believe in “sneaking peeks” into other people’s lives (and I don’t know whether I could if I tried). I like to have my privacy respected, and want to offer others the same consideration. And one of my primary goals for this lifetime is to not create any more negative karma that I would have to work out in future lives.

The information that I receive in a reading usually comes in the form of general impressions, guidance, suggestions, and encouragement. Even when the information relates to a specific experience that the person is having or has had, I don’t usually see the details of that experience – my guides are able to place enough information in my mind so that I get the gist of images or ideas which would be helpful, but not necessarily the exact personal experience they’re related to. I imagine that our guides strive to protect our privacy as well. I have often told a client that an experience they had at a specific age is very relative to the situation they’re currently experiencing, and I can name the age at which they had the past experience, but do not receive any information about the actual experience. If there’s something of import that happened, the client will be aware of it. I believe that this is partly to maintain the privacy of the client’s life experience, but also partly to prevent me from putting any “twist” on the situation as I relate the information I receive. As much as I work to remove my own perspective when I’m reading, everyone does have a unique viewpoint, and I believe that the guidance I receive comes in such a way that it will relate to the client’s frame of reference, not mine. Sometimes I need to interpret the information, but usually only if its relationship to the situation is unclear.

Because this work is often mysterious and unfathomable, I tell my clients to trust their own intuition as I read – when we hear something that’s true for us, we usually get an “Ah-ha!” feeling, a feeling of rightness on a gut level. I prefer that my clients judge for themselves whether or not the guidance I’m offering is helpful to them – each of us has to live our own life the way we see fit, and when you get a reading, it’s best to take any information that works for you, and leave the rest. Don’t let anyone talk you into something that you don’t feel is right. Only you can make choices that are right for you.
